Supporting Canadian Athletes and Teams: How to Make a Difference

Canadians have a long history of supporting their favorite athletes and teams, both financially and otherwise. From the Athlete Assistance Program (AAP) to the Community Game Program grants, there are a number of ways to show your support. In this article, we'll explore the various ways Canadians can help their favorite athletes and teams, both financially and otherwise. The AAP is a program that provides financial support to athletes who play sports whose high-performance programs (HP) are financially supported by Sport Canada. This program recognizes the commitment that athletes make to the national team's training and competition programs offered by their National Sports Organizations (NSO) and seeks to alleviate some of the financial pressures associated with preparing for and participating in international sports.

The NSO will make a significant investment in the growth and development of the athlete and, in return, will need the support of the athlete in the role of ambassador. In addition to the AAP, there are other ways Canadians can support their favorite athletes and teams. For example, ViaSport has a number of programs that support community sports participation, such as the Sports Participation Program, the Community Sports Development Fund, and grants for Aboriginal sports. Hosting BC provides funding for international, national, provincial, or regional sporting events. Organizers can request funds for the operating expenses of the event.

Events must be approved by the appropriate national or provincial sports organization and support the development of athletes. Sports and recreational facilities are generally financed locally, mainly through usage rates and local government taxes. From time to time, sports and recreational facilities are eligible under various infrastructure programs. In addition, bicycle-related infrastructure is financed through programs such as Bike BC. Some sports infrastructure is eligible for funding through Infrastructure Canada's gas tax program. Canadians can also show their support by requesting financial support for sports organizations or applying for gaming licenses.

For example, some types of trips are eligible uses of Community Game Program grants, such as essential trips for direct delivery of the program, which are funded by gaming grants. In addition, some sports infrastructure is eligible for funding through Infrastructure Canada's gas tax program. Playing organized hockey as children is a rite of passage in many Canadian communities, although the increase in equipment costs, travel and league fees have increasingly made it a mostly upper-middle class activity. To help alleviate some of these costs, AthleteScan's sports solutions program is available to provide support, assistance and guidance on these issues. The NSO may also place its logo on any clothing and equipment of the athlete with whom it competes when representing the NSO or on events authorized by the NSO that include activities not related to the competition. When athletes who receive a card move permanently to a national team training center designated by the NSO or to a permanent training location (in the case of decentralized sports) to pursue their high-performance sports career, the AAP can help offset some of the relocation costs. In eastern Canada, this sport is also very popular at the university level, and most of the region's major universities compete in their own league, the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA).

Athletes who qualify for tuition support and who receive financial support from a Canadian post-secondary institution will continue to be eligible for tuition support if the prize does not offset all of the tuition fees. In addition to financial support, Canadians can also show their support by participating in fundraising activities requested by their NSO or helping athletes manage their interactions with the media. Both functions are equally important since they help boost an NSO's business which helps finance an athlete's sporting activities. There are many ways Canadians can show their support for their favorite athletes and teams. From financial assistance programs like AAP to fundraising activities requested by an NSO or helping athletes manage their interactions with media outlets - there are plenty of ways Canadians can make a difference.
